I want to thank the great airmen, that gave the 303rd the living tradition... I was privileged to be in the 303rd BW at Davis Monthan AFB.. 1962 thru 1964, during the B-47 days.

.....It is with deep regret that I report the death of my Dad, Dale E. Bartholomew. He passed away on 4/30/02 while hospitalized in the Cleveland Clinic. My Dad lead an exciting and active life covering 82 years. He was most proud of his military service as a B-17 Pilot in the 360th Bomb Squadron (H) "Hell's Angels" 303rd BGA. His crew kept in touch over the years and they had some fun times getting together. Dad and his crew were members of the "35 Club" with sorties flown 5/20/44-7/13/44. This was achieved without any Purple Heart Medals. My Dad was the old man of the ship and was glad that he always got his boys home. My Mom, Ellen, passed away in 1975 but Dad remarried and he and Jean would have celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary this July. He had 3 children from his first marriage; Charlene, Jan and Philip. Big Daddy had 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He will be missed but we have so many wonderful memories.

I have lived in the United Kingdom for 26 years and served here with the US Air Force from 1968-1971. I have long been a keen student of 8th Air Force history here and have visited several former 8th airfields, including Lavenham, Parham, Kimbolton, Bassingbourn, Alconbury, to name just a few. I can tell you there are still some ghosts to be found on those lonely stretches of broken tarmac and taxiways. I still visit the site of my former base, RAF Chicksands, although the USAF moved out in 1995 and the Defense Intel- ligence School of the British Armed Forces has moved in since then. The Brits have taken very good care of my former duty station, I'm happy to say. One last point about Lavenham; the Lavenham Hotel, which used to play host to the Americans stationed there, still has a great painting of General Fred Castle, who was killed on a mission around Christmas, 1944. I believe that Castle Air Force Base in California is named after him. Great website, keep up the good work, guy. Best Regards, Mark Wendruff

There has been a lot of discussion on our web and our forum anent Luftwaffe tactics and other actions during the war, and the Luftwaffe use of captured U. S. Air Corps aircraft. Due to my association with the post-war German Lufthansa Airlines, I decided to relate some of my experiences for our 303rd BGA members. I firmly believe it was an historic experience for someone like me to be thrust among the men we flew against in combat. For about ten years I was a Flugkapitan with the German Airline and also a member of the Luftfahrtbundesant (German FAA) as a Check and Instructor Pilot. I was even required to take my written German Airline License in German. That was an experience for an American lad with a boyhood German language ability!

When the 303rd went to North Africa in June of 1945 after the war, my postwar career was cast when I met some TWA hierarchy inspecting the TWA Contract Carrier work for the U. S. Air Transport Command. I joined TWA's foreign operations. They had the contract to conduct the operations to get the postwar Lufthansa "off the ground" as it were. Thus my connection with Lufthansa as an Airline Captain.

During this time I worked with, taught, checked, and became very close friends with many of the pilots against whom we, in the 303rd, flew during the war. I was privileged to know and work with such as Fritz Stehle, a famous Luftwaffe wartime pilot. Fritz Koenig, with whom I still am in contact. Became friends with the late General Galland, who was affectionately known as "Dolfo" and who made many interesting observations about our wartime operations.

One thing these Luftwaffe pilots made clear was their utter respect for and concern for the manner in which we in the 8th U. S. Air Force, attacked and conducted our military operations. They absolutely feared our close-knit formations. They would avoid any formation which was flown tightly. I know many of you will recall the little gaggles of Luftwaffe fighters which use to "group" up at our 1 o'clock and 11 o'clock positions, waiting to pounce. It was THERE they decided whether THAT formation of ours was flown loosely enough to attack! So much for the constant efforts to require our pilots to fly close formation. It WAS a definite plus for our side!

During layovers on Lufthansa flights, we would ALWAYS discuss the war, as my resumè showed my service in the 8th Air Force. Our discussions were considered truly talks between men who had seen combat from EACH side!

In conclusion, I wish to advance the idea that I was tremendously impressed with the patriotic sense these Luftwaffe men possessed. And I was especially impressed with their sense of very high respect for us as airborne warriors. They were, as were you and I, doing their job! There was very little "party" concern. I found them gentlemen of the first order, and I cannot say enough for the character of the late General Galland.

Gentlemen, we flew against a force which was doomed to lose. When the end came, they knew it. They were a respected force which we defeated in an honorable manner. Thank you.

I am working on a self made project of listing all B-17 by Serial Numbers and names (if they had one). Then hopefully find some to post it on a site so that it can help others find out about the planes that their ansectors may have flew or fought on. I am a professional Fire Fighter and my father served in WWI and WWII. God Bless all the people who have Served their Country and will Serve it in the future

My father, William F. Brown Jr. , was a flight engineer and waist gunner on two 303rd B-17's, Knockout Dropper and Miss Bea Haven. I have guite a bit of info on Knockout Dropper but very little on Miss Bea Haven and would appreciate any stories, memories, etc., as he passed away in 1991, long before I had satisfied my own curiosity.

I am the granddaughter of Arthur M. Padmore. I could not find any pictures of him on this website and wondered if anyone knew him and had stories to share with me. My grandpa has been gone since 1990 and I miss him very much. He rarely spoke of the war...mostly that it was very difficult when the planes would not return. If anyone has a picture of him or any information, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Tonya

I came here looking for contact information for Sam F. DiNoto. He emailed me last year about my website and told me that he flew in B-17s. I wanted to talk to him again but when I tried emailing him recently I found out his email address is no longer current. If there is anywhere else I might look I would appreciate knowing it. Thanks and thanks to you all,

Bob Hallden was my uncle (that I never met). Thank you for the great website. My Uncle Bob gave his life so that I can be free, a fact that I was reminded of on Sunday, April 28, 2002 as I sailed in the Galveston jetties and saw the B-17 from the Galveston Air Show. It was a most impressive sight. I took a picture of that B-17 and posted it to my website at http://users3.ev1.net/~sailord/april28/ Thank you for creating and maintaining a great website. Sailor Don

A fantastic, interesting and fact filled yet personal page. I am impressed by what I've seen and it impresses on me the youth that was lost by the young boys that flew and died so we can live the lives that we do. We will and can never let them know how much we respect, admire and and pity them for all that they went through day after day. THANK YOU ALL AMERICAN AIRMAN .

I was stationed at Bolling AFB, in Washington DC from 1957 to 1960. At that time, Master Sgt.James W. Sublett was my squadron first sgt. Looking at the picture of the 359th Walker crew, there is a sgt. James W. Sublett. I remember he showed me a scrap book he kept when he was a prisoner of war. I believe he was from Shrevesport, Louisiana. Could this be the same Sgt. Sublett? I have been out of the Air Force for 42 years but I always remembered my First Sgt. Thanks in advance for any info. My grandfather was in the 303rd, and I have searched and searched your website to find something on him. His name is Rector A. "Doc" Williams. He arrived at Molesworth in 1943 as an MP and later served as a tail gunner aboard several B-17's. The only one whose name he can remember is the Duchess about which I was able to find some information on your website. My grandfather really doesn't like to talk about the war but I'd like to see if anyone knows him and see if there are any records on him at all. I can't even find his name on your roster. I also couldn't find his pilot's name (Exem). ANy information you have would be great, and I can provide you with some information on his time there. Thank you, and thanks for keeping these heroes accessible for future generations! Heidi Peltier

Hello! I thoroughly enjoyed your website, its a great tribute to the flyers of yesteryear. I am currently an aircraft mechanic for United Express at Dulles,Va. I am greatly interested in mechanics and the craft of working on the WWII aircraft. I work occasionally with a group of WWII reenactors that reenact the entire aspect of the WWII bomber squadron. I (of course) represent one of the mechanics. I am always interested in learning more and acquiring items to authenticate our reenacting.I would love to talk or correspond with anyone that could possibly help. Thank you for your time. 1) The B-17 has long been my favorite aircraft, although I have never had the chance to fly onboard one. This is a longtime dream. She is a wonder as are those who flew her.
2) I taught History for many years and was sure to hallow the lives of the servicemen who died for our freedom in WWII. This was long before "Private Ryan" and the present move to memorialize the sacrifices they and their surviving comrades made.
3) Among my favorite types of music is Big Band.
4) I have spent time with oportunities to talk with the veterans who have crossed my path across the years and have an appreciable library on the stories of their trials and the war that defined them.
5) I just wanted to take a moment and encourage you to continue your good work and pass on your spirit to the generation to come.
6) I am yours truly, Guy D. Crowley, aged 43 years.
7) Thank you for all you have done.

I was stationed in Molesworth Feb 1954-1956. I arrived by surface with the 582nd AR Group out of Great Falls Montana. I was assigned to SA-16's. What a dreary, cold, muddy, miserable place it was. Being the beginning of Feb. sure didn't help matters much. 30 months later I was more than happy to be leaving. But as I look back at all of the history that took place there, the flight crews that gave their all, I feel very fortunate to have been a belated part of Molesworth. You have a great web site.... I have enjoyed it. Keep up the good work.

Hello, I was looking for information on a/c #42-97691 of the 427BS. I found yesterday in the Brussels Army Museum Archives that that Fortress made a forced landing in VOLKER, Belgium, on November 26, 1944. It had been battle-damaged in aerial combat and in the Museum database, there is only mention of the name of the pilot, Captain HEALY, and of "3 men blown"... I didn't find detailed info on that forced landing on your excellent site. The MACR # is 11193. Could you help me in obtaining a few more details ? I was born in 1943 and it's thanks to people like the ones from the 303rd that I live in a free country and that I don't have to speak German if I don't want to. (Note that I hold no grudge against the people of Germany.) All the best from Brussels, BELGIUM. Thank you for your care. Edouard Renière

I'm a friend member of the 303rd BGA and on the 28th of March, I, with a colleague of mine, visited your old base at Molesworth. What a beautiful Memorial at the gate! I had the privilege of signing the Visitors Book with a heartfelt comment. At the gate we met some present members of the USAF - one of whom was Sgt. Mike Lovejoy. He went to the trouble of going into the base solely to get two bars of Butterfinger, simply because I asked if they were still obtainable. You see - I hadn't had one since 1947, when I was stationed in India and I loved them! He wouldn't let me pay for them either. What a great guy! While we were in the area, we visited Kimbolton the home in World War 2 of the 379th Bomb Group, but sadly, all there is to be seen nowadays, is a Quonset hut and a small piece of concrete roadway. Ah! well, that's how it goes I guess. Sincerely, Peter J. Lewis

I found your page by looking up "Jersey Bounce." I had no idea it was the name of a fighter plane. My father, Buddy Feyne, wrote the lyrics to the song Jersey Bounce. He saw action in the Pacific (on Leyte) and was decorated (bronze star). I don't know if he knew that his song was also the name of this plane. It would have made him very proud. Your story is amazing and I would like to link it to the page I am building for my father. www.buddyfeyne.com Thanks for having your story out so the world can see it.

Just happened to check out the recently added photo page and noted the picture of the Royal Family, which I presume was taken on July 6, 1944 during their visit to Molesworth. That was the date of my first combat mission and I was not aware of the visit until after it was over -probably was too excited to realize what else was going on at the base. I heard later though that they had made a good impression and in turn were impressed by the tour and the Flying Fortresses, expecially the Princess who is now the Queen. Great website here, I visit it often.

Great Picture! Here is a great fact for you. During WWII my father and his brothers all served in the U.S. military European operations. The unique thing was that it was all the brothers in my deseased grandfather's family. Five brothers Elio, William, Clarence, Joeseph and Lee Cecchini. The youngest could have stayed home to work for his widowed mother (my grandmother) but he refused and enlisted as there was no way he was going to let his other four brothers serve and him not! Best regards, Nick Cecchini

Quote from "A Reporter's Life" by Walter Cronkite, Chapter 5: "I dressed. I knew it had to be D-Day. (etc.-etc.) Squadron leader LEWIS LYLE led that potentially explosive flight up through the clouds. When we broke out, he planned to make full circle and try again for the target, but then he recalled that during his briefing he'd been told that there would be so many planes at so many altitudes that strict flight patterns had to be observed, and that meant returning home. We landed on a fog-shrouded runway with those bombs still armed. Now, that was a hairy landing." I wonder how many knew that Walter Cronkite flew with him that day? I thought this very interesting.

My dad was stationed in Biloxi training in the 40's, I believe at Keesler. All I know is he was in a B17, either a tail gunner or a navigator. The war ended before he was able to go overseas. His name was George Biermann. If anyone has any ideas to help me in my search for info about his plane, crew, etc, contact me at my email address. Thank You

Hello gentlemen. My grandfather Richard N. Snyder was a member of the 303rd. I am very proud of all that you men accomplished, and can only hope that my generation and the many american generations that will follow will do their part to uphold the level of pride and dedication that was shown in the skies in and around Molesworth. My grandfather, before he passed away, took me and my father with him to a few reunions. To actually meet the men that went thru so much with my grandfather was probably one of the most memorable moments in my life. I miss my grandfather very much and there are times when I find myself still trying to ask him questions, just to get his comical response and realize it wasn't as bad as I thought it was. The one thing I will always have, and hopefully be able to pass to my children, is the incredible history that their Great-grandfather was a part of. With all that said, to all veterans of the 303rd, as I said to so many at the reunions, thank-you all so much for everything you did as young men and for all that you taught us when you came home.

First of all i must say the site is class A, a first rate job, i am the section reprentive of a WWII living history society, that represents the USAAF during the period of WWII, we do not represent a particular B\G at present, but are an active group through the year, attending functions such as 1940's dances, some film work, and airshows, i've searched many sites to match my name with a crew member from a B\G and this is the only one i've found, the guy even looks like a family member so keep up the good work, and let us keep them remembered Johnny Sherwin, midlands WWII living history society, England USAAF section

On a sad note I report the passing of "DR" Davis. His wife Marjorie phoned today to tell me she buried him on Monday, 18 March. Another of the Greatest Generation has left us. Marjorie says "DR" was lucid to the end, though with Alzheimers. You cannot miss "DR" when you look at the many Lead Crew photos. He was liked by all and will be missed. "DR" was one of my close friends, in combat, and in our later years.

Just a word of thanks and praise for all the work that has gone into the creation of this site. My father [now deceased] spent approximately one year at stalag Vll-A after being wounded and captured somewhere in France. At the of his capture, he was with the Army's 83rd. Division / 331-Infantry/ A-company. My father would not talk about his time there. No one in the family knew where he was inprisioned, until our local Dept. of Veterans Affairs officer read me all his personal information kept by them. His paperwork stated that he was being held in Moosburg Germany, would I be [wrong] in assuming that he [was] at Stalag Vll-A. If this is where he was located, my viewing of the camp photos leaves me speachless, knowing that he walked the very grounds that I was viewing. My father was William J. Monahan who was a captain of the "Hell's Angels". Dad passed away on August 1, 1986 and is buried at the National Cemetary located near Otis Airforce base (I believe in Bourne, Ma). After the war, my dad went on to to receive a BS in Chemistry from Boston College and graduated in 1950 and became a Senior VP of Marketing in the Petrochemical industy. He was married and had 3 children and 14 grandchildren. His grandson, Rob, graduated from Annapolis in 1995 and was inspired to serve in the military because of his grandfather. He is currently a Lt. and will become a JAG officer soon. He is currently a Surface Warfare Officer and served in one deployment to the Persian Gulf 3 yrs ago. Dad was a POW and never shared much about his experience as a POW. I believe he spent 6 months in hospitals after he was liberated. I was very pleased to discover this sight and the pictures of my father's crew and hope to one day visit the memorial to his crew in Savanah, GA. Regards, Bob Monahan

I just finished reading "HALF A WING, THREE ENGINES AND A PRAYER" by Brian D. O'Neill, that is how I found out about your web site. My father (now deceased) was a member of the Army-Air Corp during WWII and outfitted B-17 and B-29 bombers and their crews. Some of you may have flown in aircraft that he prepped. I know he did everything in his power to see that you and your aircraft were ready for your journey into history. Those of us that have not lived in constant fear of death can ever truly understand or comprehend what your lives were like. All we can do is to make sure that your sacrifices are never forgotten. Thank you for answering the call and giving up your youth so that others could have theirs. I hope that your lives have been rich and fulfilling as payment for what you endured. Sincere wishes to you for long lives with clear skies and no flak.

Memorial B-17G #44 6504 --- Let me introduce myself. My name is Tony Gibson and I live in South Shields which is situated the North east of England UK. I have two teenage sons who are both members of the Air Cadets. A military based, uniformed, youth organisation run on Royal Air Force lines. I have recently visited their Cadet establishment and saw that they had a memorial to a crashed plane belonging to the 303rd Bombardment group from WW11. It is the propeller blade from the plane which crashed in the nearby Cheviot Hills during the war. It has the names of the crew embossed on it. Out of curiosity decided to see if an association existed, hence finding this superb web site. I wondered if any one visiting this site would like a photograph of this memorial. I will happily arrange that. I also wondered if you would like some contact with these kids. They all have, obviously a great interest in Aviation, and have no doubt they would be thrilled with any contact. Regards, Tony Gibson

Great site. I work for Northumberland National Park and I am currently writing a book on the archaeology and history of the College Valley, the location for the WWII rescue featuring Sheila the Sheepdog. I would be very grateful if you could tell me who owns the photograph of Dagg and Sheila. I would very much like to include it in the book. A photo of the B17 that crashed or something similar would also be very welcome, and would be acknowledged in print as a matter of course. There is also the possibility of dedicating the booklet to all those airmen who lost their lives in the Cheviot Hills during WWII. Thanks.

I have just finished the book B 17 Three Engines and a Prayer. Such a powerful book. My hobby is WW2 aircraft and the brave men who maintained and flew in the same. Been in and out of the the Military Book Club and can't get past the aircraft. My parents owned a plane (Taylor craft) in the early through late 40s and flying is one of my first memories. Mother had a license in early 44 and took a taxi to and from airport as she did not have a drivers license. She wanted to join the Army Air Force to ferry aircraft but my father would not let her join. My respect to you all who sacrificed the limit for our country.

I've been looking for info on my Uncle Lawrence B. Evans and it's here. All I knew was that he was a tailgunner in the 360th and was killed in Dec. 1943, 5 years before I was born. He was my dad's older brother. My dad was in the Navy on the Battleship Mississippi. He still doesn't talk much about Brooks, as the family called him, but he has always carried his dog tag in his pocket on his key ring. Still does today. I was most interested in the crew picture you have posted. I have a different crew picture and they are all in uniform. Might be a flight school picture. Thanks for this webpage. It is more than I ever expected to find.

I got involvedin the 303rd Association while seeking information about my uncle Glenn H. Neely. I have every intention of making the next convention. I have been very fortunate in meeting quite a few former crew members from other BG's and hearing their stories. there is so much history that needs to be written down. I try to take notes. God bless each and every one of you

My grandfather, James Maxwell, served with the 303rd as a navigator, became a POW when shot down in Oct 43, and was interned for 18+ months at Stalag Luft III. Given the fractured nature of family histories, this site provides a tremendous service in answering some basic questions and providing a lasting reference. So, thanks very much for all your efforts; we do appreciate it. As an aside, if others out there served with my grandfather in Victor Loughnan's crew (Cat O' Nine Tails) or were interned with him in Stalag Luft III, I would be very interested in making contact. Thanks very much.

Fantastic site for all who are interested in history of military aviation. A lot of War Heroes passed away but their names never should be forgotten - they still alive in our hearts, I am sure. This is a fascinating website. Very well done. I am a member of the 8th AFHS, so I found this to be very interesting. My only regret is that you only have CD-ROM available for disemination and not a printed book. However, keep up the good work. I will be back to read more mission journal entries. Best regards, Fred

My Uncle, Truman R. Lord, was killed in 1944 over Germany. I'm told they never recovered his body and that there is a marker in Holland at a military cemetery. My mother, Uncle Truman's sister, still has the flag and purple heart that was given to their mother. We would appreciate and enjoy any information anyone might have about our uncle. Thank you.

I am writing for a friend who is also a 303rd. member. His name is Kenneth Hildebrand. He was with Capt. Frost crew. They were shot down on Nov. 12th.,1942. He would like to know if there is any way to locate records of his escape from France and his trip over the mountains in Spain. He arrived back in England in April, 1943. I think that is correct. Did they keep records in England or would the 303rd. have info on this. Would appreciate any info about this that you can give us. They went down over Rouen, France. The plane was named One o'clock jump. The pilot was a prisoner of war. Thank you. F. Hinds. I was flight eng. on the plane named Skywolf.

I just picked up your latest newsletter from my fathers home. My Father was Raymond A. Espinoza and was the drummer for the base band, The Rhythm Pilots. I am very sad to let you know that my father passed on 11/04/2001. He was a very proud member of the Hell's Angels 303rd Bomb group. His office is still covered with pictures of the beautiful aircraft that was flown out of Molesworth, England. Upon his death we located a small journal that he kept during the War. I only wish there were more pages written. I will cherish the stories that my father shared with us about his service in England. He had often stated that those were the best days of his life. Thank You to the Comrades that helped make those times special. Cristina (Espinoza) Salmon.

My uncle was Kremer, Mathias J., member of 358th BS. Shot down on Black Thursday 10-14-43. I was an Aircrewman in the US Navy during the Viet Name era. Recently picked up the book "Half a wing, three engines and a prayer," and found your website. Uncle Matt and I have spent many hours discussing our flying experiences. He is not doing well. I am attempting to pass on to my children the importance of what my uncle did in WW II.

Joined the group as a associate member during the Schaumburg, IL Reunion. I brought a model of "Hells Angels" to the reunion and since then have found markings for several other 303 B-17s. I became good friends with Smitty and sure do miss him. It seems like I met all you guys a few years ago but it has been many years ago. Time sure doesn't stand still. I had an opportunity to go to a ground school and fly in a B-17G in August 2000. It sure was small in there! Thanks for doing what you did back then. Robert "Butch" Bejna

My grandfather was in the 26th infantry div. he was a M.P. ( military police) In WW II, And Im proud that he was there. Although he did not talk of it much, when he did, I think I was really too young to understand exactly what he was trying to say. I wish now that I could sit with him and talk of ALL his experiences Im sure it would sink in now that im a little more mature. I still miss him and I wear his favorite ring every day! Also hanging in my living room is a Nazi flag 12'x 5' (its huge)That was brought back from Germany , I was told from my grandmother (who was also a nurse in WW II) that it was taken from a large auditorium during takeover, I can only imagine how big this place was! People are in awe when they see it. I hang It because im proud of my grandparents Edward E. Ashley and Phyllis G.Portous (-They actually met while in the military.)

In the summer of 2001, Ed Miller of 303rd BG, sent a letter to me from the Association advising they had my name as a former member of the 427th Sqdn. I was one of the men that had to leave my crew when each crew was reduced from ten to nine men and I was sent to a B-26 Martin Marauder Bomb Grp. By a round about way I learned later that my B-17 crew had been lost in action. I have tried for years to find out more about the survivors of my crew and the circumstances of the mission. Ed has provided me with this website and other information and I welcome to do some research and obtain additional facts. Bob Schlotterbeck

My father was a pilot in the 303rd. He died in 1991 and never spoke much of his service experiences unless prodded a lot. This web site is a really good idea. This was and is a great generation. He said it was one of the most exciting things he ever did. He was single and felt the married serviceman had it worse.

"Susfu" Edward J. Broussard's original crew-front row-2nd from left is my father: S/Sgt. William A. Karanson Jr. I have the names of the remainder of the crew written on a dollar bill. When I have a few minutes, I will forward all the names I can. Thanks for the picture! My father passed away in 1984 after a long illness. He always had the highest regard for his fellow crewmen. I have been looking for a picture taken of him standing alone in front of the plane after a very exhausting and sad mission. I only saw it one time as a child, but I will never forget the look of anguish on his face. I was told by my mother that a photographer (I think she said "Life") wanted to use the picture, but my father refused. I sure would like to see it again. My best to all of you. Sincerely, William A. Karanson III

What brought me here was my interest in both the British and American european air war during WW11. I have commented on your web site in the past. My main interest is finding location of all the old bomber and fighter bases throughout the eastern counties of England, some of which I hope to visit, and Molesworth will be one of them. Also a special visit to the American airforce cemetery at Madingly.... I salute you one and all.

Barton McMillan bjmc83@flash.net 21 Jan 02 - Atlanta, Georgia - (family of a 303rd Member)
My father, Murdock B. McMillan, Jr. was a B-17 pilot in the 303rd. He received a DFC, but very rarely spoke about his experiences. His attitude was "We had a job to do and we did it." I know that he was one of the few pilots from his class that survived the war. I know that he had a bad knee that he blamed on a shot out rudder wire (he had to keep his knees locked, fully extended, for multiple hours until he could bring the aircraft in. He said he had to be lifted bodily out of the cockpit because he could not bend his knees!). And, he HATED lamb because he had to eat so much of it while stationed in England. In later life my mother was disappointed because my father had no interest in traveling to Europe because he had seen all he was interested in seeing during the war. He also refused to buy a German or Japanese vehicle. My father died in February, 1996. He was a true hero, as were so many of his generation that "did what (they) had to do." I did not appreciate his sacrifice while he was alive. I know so much more now because of historians like Stephen Ambrose. The remaining live member of the crew, Marvin Shaw, found this site and passed the picture and web address on to my mother. I don't know that we would have otherwise found out about it. Thank you for this piece of family history. His crew picture is now proudly hanging in my den and my children (and I) know just a little more about their grandfather. God bless you all!

I found your site from a computer game-B-17 Gunner- and have visited site many times. It is very informative and a pleasure to read about so many airmen and their stories. I lived in Springfield, Mass during the War and saw many B-17, B24,and P-47s in the skies over Springfield from Weatover AAF. I could always tell when an airlift was taking place as there were so many planes in the sky. I hope to visit your museum this March on our way to visit our daughter in Chandler.

I may be off base (no pun intended) but I served in the 303rd A&E squadron at Davis Monthan AFB Tucson AZ from 1956 to 1959 which was part of 303rd Bomb Wing. I was much too young to be in WW2 but I was proud to wear the Unit citation that you guys earned. I only served 90 days TDY in Guam but I like to thing that the B47s we serviced convinced the Russians it would not be a good idea to attack. Thanks for the great job you did when I was only a kid and God Bless all of you. A1/C Lou Kessler

An avid WW11 buff at work gave me this e-mail address after I showed him a picture of the Sub-Depot Squadron, 303rd bomb group, 1st division, U.S.A.A.F. taken at Molesworth, England about 1944. My father, Robert Thomas Franklin, and Eddie Giza, my parents best man at their wedding on May 25th, 1945 at St. Mary's church in Northampton, England, are amoung the many servicemen in this picture. Unfortunatly, my father died on Jan. 27th, 1998. I've been told that Dad was not allowed to fly planes during WW11 because of an enlarged heart, (which was actually due to his strenuous exercises prior to the war. So he was an instrument engineer. Later in his life he was able to accomplish his dream and got his pilot's licence and worked as an instructor in Lubbock, Texas; Reno, Nevada; and Fairbanks, Alaska. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Amy Turner Franklin, and his only child, myself. My mother had been a sergent in the Women's Land Army during this time. She has written a story about her experiences during this period also. My parents were both founding members of the American Air Museum in Duxford, England also. I hope to gain more insight into this arduous time period in both my parents lifes through information found in this web site. Thank You Sincerely, Delia Franklin-Nelson Suncourt@Juno.com

My dad was a turret gunner on the Ponderous Pachyderm B-24. I'm very interested in the heavy bombers of ww2. I think every one who served in that war are my hero's. My dad kept a journal of every mission he was on and how many tons and the location. I also have pics of bombers and their little friends. I will have to look through his things and find out what bomb group he was in and write some more. Thank you all very much. I am an Army veteran myself, but I have always been fond of the 40's era. Thank you for letting me talk to you. Paul Bussell
