Charles G. Fertitta --- cgfsr46@sbcglobal.net --- 18 Aug 08 - Missouri City (Houston), TX: My dad, SSgt Joseph F. Fertitta, was a 303rd, 358th Sqdn, B-17 Tail gunner stationed Molesworth Airdrome, England. He was shot down on his third mission over Calais, France on Jan. 14, 1944. He was a P.O.W until liberated at Tagau on the Elb River on April 26, 1945. I am an Air Force Vietnam Vet who served at Takli, Thailand during early 1970's. We spent many hours documenting his Army Air Corps days into a family story album. I researched a great deal of information from your web site to coraoberated the details of his memories. Thanks for a great site. He had great memories of the 303rd, his squadron and he and mom's attendance at the many conventions before he became to ill to travel in 2001. Dad passed away on July 22, 2008 two days before his 86 birthday. I insured we met his key wish - a full military funeral. It was included an eight man Army Vets group performing the 21 gun salute, three active Army personnel as the Honor Guard from Ft Polk, in his mom's hometown of Leesville, LA. I assisted the chaplin by presenting the flag to my mom before his solemn explanation and presentation of the 3 shell casings. I also received enough extra shell casings for all of his children and grand children to also have there own. There were also active Air Force Major and Tech Sgt. Everyone commented they had never seen so beautiful and moving ceremony. A fitting end to an interesting life.

My name is Brian Norwood, and I am an artist living in Southeastern New Mexico--about 50 miles from the site of the former Hobbs Army Air Field. I have recently completed a sculpture which I would like to let your readers know about.

The sculpture is a life sized representation of a B-17G made from 1/4 inch steel plate. It stands 19 feet tall at the tail, and is almost 82 feet from end-to-end. It is a two-dimensional silhouette, but gives the appearance of being three-dimensional. This sculpture is intended to honor Hobbs Army Air Field and the men, women and aircraft that served there.

There is still some cleanup and landscaping to be done, but the plane is on view for anyone to see. It sits just off the taxiway for runway 21 at what is now Hobbs Industrial Air Park and can be seen from NM Highway 18 just north of Hobbs.

I flew with the John D. Davis crew which after losing two B-17's in crashes we were the original crew for the all (silver first in the group) that was christened by General Dwight D. Eisenhour "The General Ike" in April of 1944, at the time we were a lead crew with some 20 missions completed. I was led to your web site by clicking on an attachment from one of the E-amil messages from the E-Mail ring of the 91st Bomb Group Memorial assn. of more than 100 veterans and assaciates, covering the POW sites in Germany 1942-1945. My father told me that when he was nine years old, it was the 11.01.1944, an american aircraft crashed a couple off kilometers away from the village. He and his twinbrother walked throu the snow about 6 kilometers to the crahpoint in the woods. A man took pictures off the plane.´(I`ll try to get some off them and I send it too you.) Asfar as I know the crashed plane was the B-17F-27-bo-41-24619 S-for Sugar, flown by 2Lt.Thomas L. Simmons. People who have been there talked about an Rabbit at the nose. As we in Germany know now as well, it was "Bug Bunny". The number which you can see at rhe picture says ....619 and C and S. So it is shure that this is the "S-for Sugar". 64 years later my uncle and me tried to find the place where the plane went down. And we found it. My uncle remembered the place and we found parts of the plane. The Mission Report Number 98 says, that this plane crashed between the Dummer Lake and Minden near Oberhaus. This can not be true. Somewhere else I read that it crashed near Braunlage. That is right. The place is southwest of St.Andreasberg. It`s marked in Google Earth, 51°41´09.26"N 10°32´57.48"E. I hope I could give you new Information and I will send you the pictures as soon as posible. H.-G.Schaerf

I don't think I have ever known anyone so patriotic and caring for his country and family. He was active in the local DAV Chapter and EX-POW Chapter till the last few months of his life last year, where he died at the Veterans hospital in Asheville, N. C. He will always be a hero to me. He was an Englishman (a Yorkshireman) and was in the RAF, but seconded to work for the 'Yanks' for the whole of the war. Ending his time with the 303rd in Sept (I think), 1944. I have some photographs of him and the other Brits who served with the 303rd and also have some photos of various Yank friends of my grandfathers. I wondered, could anyone tell me anymore info about the Brits who were with the 303rd? Three crew survived (including Lt Alvin Determan, Pilot) and seven crew were KIA of which several are listed as interred in National Cemeteries in Europe, but the remainder are not mentioned. Is there any way to determine the final fate of those unreported five KIA? One of them, the Bombadier, Lt. James A. McCamy, is a distant relative. Thanks.

He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force on June 1, 1943 at the age of 30. Served in England at Molesworth with the 303. Honorably discharged on October 19, 1945 earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. My brother has recently passed away but owned Stuka Military Museum in Illinois and has both uniforms of Willaim and Ted on display next to each other along with a lot of documentation. Not sure how he acquired them but he had been a military collector for over 40 years, and is credited in over 20 + books on militaria collecting. He had in his collection a book published by J. Tennelli which shows some of the headgear and uniforms worn by both William and Ted. I, his brother am trying to take care of the museum now that he is gone and doing research to make sure everything is documented.

Donald M. Berardino --- hidegviharcomcast.net --- 01 Jul 08 - Pittsburgh, PA: Re: 360 Squadron. I wish to write this little vignette concerning both of my cousins Lt. Joseph Palmer (Avenger) and his brother Chuck. They had a reunion in England 1943. Joe had just flown his B-17 over to Molesworth Air Base and Chuck (Army Engineers), to meet for an Easter visit. Joe decided to fly Chuck and a buddy back to the field (Braintree), where Chuck and the engineers were very near completing construction, a flight of maybe 15 minutes. This was to be accomplished while Joe's squadron was on a training mission. Joe peeled out of formation and landed at the field. About 50 trucks watched them come in. In fact, the whole post watched. Joe buzzed the field and came in low, landing smoothly, taxied down to the runway's end, amid mobs of people and cars. Cpl. Chuck Palmer and his buddy jumped out of the airplane door and strutted across the runway to their awaiting trucks. They all expected some General/VIP to alight. Joe took off, did a steep climbing turn off the runway, wagged his wings and headed home. If anyone knows of this story or any others regarding my cousin please relate to me. I reget to inform everyone that he passed away on May 31st, 2008. We have discovered some memorabilia that he kept. One is the original telegram and envelope that informed his father that he was captured. The other is a letter to his younger brother that states their plane just bombed a submarine off the coast of California.

I have been interested in history for over 6 years now, and I have collected the autographs and stories from nearly 1,600 veterans in 20 countries. The oldest veteran is currently 112 years old and the youngest enlisted at age 14. I have autographs from Pearl Harbor survivors, D-Day veterans, airman, POWs, USS Indianapolis survivors, Holocaust survivors, and even German soldiers! Back in June, I was interview by Brent Davis, who works for PBS. He called my in early-June and asked if I wanted to come down to talk about my collection for an interview that was to shown online. Once, I was there, I met Mr. Davis, and he did the first interview about my collection. After that, he and others that worked there, thought that I had a good amount in my collection, so they asked me if they could interview me for "The Columbus World War II Roadshow." They mentioned that it was to come on (in Central-Ohio) before some of the episodes of Ken Burns’ "The War." You can find this interview on YouTube under "Kyle Nappi." There have been several other people have taken the time to post my request online and in newspapers. There are too many for me to list, but if you go to Google or Yahoo and search “Kyle Nappi” you can find most of them. Recently, I also had the privilege of going to Washington, D.C. during the early part of March. I was invited to the Pentagon for a Ceremony honoring WWI veterans. I was able to meet with the last American WWI veteran, Frank Buckles. My main purpose for writing it to share with you that people from our generation do remember the past and the sacrifices that were made for our great country. However the reason I came to this site was....... I was walking in the Cheviot Hills, Northern England 7th June 2008 and came across a Machine Gun!! which I quesed came from a US aircraft, when I got home I researded through this site that it came from a B 17G 44-6504 which crashed 16 Dec 1944. I have reburied the gun as it is not right to remove items such as this, but I am attempting to find out what neads to happen to this weapon, it looks in good condition. I have tried to contact the Historic Casualty Casework team at the JCCC, England but there is no one at work today, It should either stay where it is or should be put on show, I worry that it will be taken as a trophy and lost forever. Karl Meek --- karlmeekverizon.net --- 02 Jun 08 - Fort Worth, Texas: Lt.Col. W.R. (Bill) Calhoun who piloted "8" Ball MkII (#41-24635) in the 359th passed away about 5 years ago in Fort Worth, Texas. He retired from General Dynamics as a program manager for the F-111. His only son was killed in a motorcycle accident many years before his own passing. I was a young man beginning my career at General Dynamics when Bill took me under his wing. I will always be grateful to him for his kindness, generosity and wisdom. Bill was a very interesting man with many harrowing stories of his service with the 303rd. His mission with the actor Clake Gable stands out in my memory. According to Bill, he and Mr. Gable went to London on leave together and had a wonderful time. He said when he was with Mr. Gable he didn't lack for attention from the ladies. Mr. Gable was "a true gentleman with lots of class". When I read over many of the bios contained in this web site, I am struck by how young the men were and the level of responsibility given them in the defense of our country. Poole, who was a B-24 pilot with the 461st Bomb Group in Italy during WWII. I noticed on your website, a reference to a Lawrence Poole and looked up his crew picture (358Th BS). There is an uncanny resemblence between Frank and Lawrence. Does anyone know if they were brothers? If Lawrence was anything like Frank, he had to have been an outstanding officer. But could there have been anyone less in the 303rd?

Since May last year I am in the process of documenting all allied aircraft crashes in The Netherlands (and part of the North Sea) in the 2nd World War. All data is collected in an Internet database which can be looked into by running a small (it's free) software programme. The programme can be downloaded via http://ww2.texlaweb.nl/ At the moment 324 aircraft are listed in the database of which 12 are B-17's... Not as much as I would like to, but as I have to do this all in my free spare time it may take a while to complete... However, everything is fully operational. Before and after the flight we had the great privilege of meeting and talking with Oliver L. Bashor, WWII B-17 pilot with the 303. He is 83 years old, sharp as a tack and a joy to talk with. He told us about your extraordinary web site. On another subject, our interest in the B-17 stems from the fact that my father, Anthon "Buck" Pryde, was also a B-17 pilot, in Europe. He flew several missions, spent time on a P.O.W. train and hospital and made it home after the war. Like a lot of veterans, he chose not to talk about his experiences so I has very little knowledge of what he went through. After our flight today, talking with Oliver and now experiencing your web site, I am once again motivated to search for info about my father's war time experiences. I thank you all for your service. Barbara Conn Hardesty --- lonestarjhaol.com --- 03 May 08 - Los Angeles, California: My brother, 2nd Lt. Arthur A. Conn, Jr. was the navigator one a B17 which was shot down over Magdeburg, Germany on Sept. 28, 1944. The Co-pilot of the plane and two others, I believe, survived the crash, and he called my mother and said my brother was alive after the plane crashed, and the assumption was that he was killed by the German civilians. We never heard anything official from the government about his death except that he was declared missing in action and a year later declared dead. He is buried in Margraaten, (sp?) Holland. I have never been to his grave. If any of those few crash survivors are still alive, I would appreciate any details about my brother's death. I was just told by someone last night that one could do this over the internet. I am very challenged electronically! Thank you, Barbara Conn Hardesty. P.S. Tim Bauer --- Bauer2tayahoo.com --- 18 April 08 - Batavia, OH: My uncle served as an enlisted member of the aircraft maintenance unit. During his tour of duty he saved a few momentos that were later passed on to me. I have a .50 cal. shell casing recovered from the floor of the "Duchess"'. The casing came from the area of the waist gunners, no way of knowing if it came from the right or left waist gunner. Also, I have no documentation as to the specific date the casing was recovered. I also have photos of aircraft assigned to other fields that were forced to land at the Hell's Angels field. The ariel photos I have enclosed where shot by my uncle from various points in a B-17 aircraft shortly after the war in Europe ended in 1945. The base commander, as I understand it, authorized one or more flights over previously enemy occuppied areas. All unnecessary personnell, mostley gunner's, were left behind.

Can you help me out? On the back of the trousers top and center there is some embossing in the leather with a little chain above it. Any information about them would be appreciated. Time period, or what they may be worth. They don't have the typical Army Air Force stamp on them. The're stamped U.S. Air Force. I'm starting to collect A.A.C. memorabillia. My dad served as a ball turret and tail gunner on a B-17 out of Poddington England. Flew 28 missions in the 8th A.F. 92nd B.G. 327th Sq. until VE Day. I'm mighty proud of him. My grandparents had to sign his enlistement papers because he was only 17 when he wanted to enlist. He's 82 now and every once in a while he'll remember something that happened during the war. I write it all down in a journal so we can pass it along the family.

The old Officers Club, out by the base chapel, was the Jr High and one of the large hangers was used for the gym. The chow hall next to the O'Club was our cafeteria and the large quonset across the street was used for assemblys. I believe it was used for crew briefing during the war. The main runway was closed but we had a C-47 come in once a month. I loved to explore the base, such a rich history. I heard a lot of great stories about the 303rd and Molesworth from Joe Vieira of the 359th. A great family friend.
